FGH win Lancaster Brewery’s Roll Out the Barrel and raise money for local charities

Roll out the Barrel is an annual charity event hosted by Lancaster Brewery. For the last four years the brewery has been challenging teams to complete their barrel assault course and raise money for Thumbprint which works to help people with learning difficulties to set up and run projects (you can find out more about the organisation and their work by clicking here).

FGH has been entering teams into the competition since the very first Roll out the Barrel in May 2012 and have won two out of the three preceding competitions. This year the retaining champions, FGH Spartans, were determined to hold their crown and bring the trophy back for FGH. However the Spartans faced tough competition, not only from other local teams, but also pretenders to the crown The FGH Trojans and FGH Pulp Minion.

The course itself is a test of body and brain with teams having to undertake a tricky beer- related general knowledge and arithmetic quiz, alongside the traditional barrel roll, barrel assault course, and a final obstacle where teams have to tap a barrel and hand pull their own pint. All FGH teams sailed through their qualifying rounds to ensure a strong showing in the semi finals. This saw the FGH Trojans facing off against the might of FGH Pulp Minion with the Trojans eventually hailing victorious. The Spartan’s semi-final against local team ‘The Mill’ was not plain sailing. Disaster struck in the semi finals when team Captain David Hassall, running on pure adrenalin, incurred a time penalty for non-completion of one of the obstacles. Thankfully a quick finishing time coupled with successful completion of the quiz ensured that were able to defend their title in an all FGH final.

The final itself was closely fought. Indeed for much of the final the Spartans and the Trojans were neck and neck, however Lady Luck appeared to have deserted The Spartans, when the bar of the final obstacle was unsettled and all pints had to be re-pulled. This meant that the Trojans were by far the quickest team- victory appeared to be sealed. However, when the final times were declared a flawless showing in the quiz section of the course meant that The Spartans snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to retain their title.

Spartan’s team captain David Hassall is delighted to retain his title, ” It was a great day all round and it was fantastic to see our staff pulling together to get involved and support each other. It was also great to see people who have left the company make the effort to travel across the country to take part. I think by the amount of noise I made when we were announced the winners everyone knew how much winning the event meant to me. I don’t think my competitive nature helps things either.” Peter Harrison was also pleased, “The event goes to show how keen we are as a company to come together to support local charity and fundraising initiatives. Productively investing back into the community in any way we can is key to who we are and what we stand for as an organisation. I’d like to thank all of the staff who made the effort to take part in the day and Lancaster Brewery for organising and hosting the event. Roll on 2016 event.”
