Meet the Team

Our History

FGH Security was founded on 27th March 2003 with the mission and purpose of raising the standards in the UK Private Security Industry.

In early 2003, our very first customers were Grizedale and County Colleges at Lancaster University; we provided a team to work one night only for the Extravaganza parties.

At the time, Door Supervisors were still called Bouncers, and many wore bomber jackets and tracksuits and would smoke on the door. Extreme, unnecessary violence was commonplace,  and it was not unusual for teams of Bouncers to meet for a few pints prior to starting work!

The training was different back then too; Door Supervisors took a one-day course and then applied for a licence with their local council.  It cost £40 per year for the licence.  Security Guards nationwide had no licence or training given.

We aimed to raise these standards. We created many new courses, implemented 100’s of procedures, and developed best practices in hospitality, security and incident management.

In 2005 we took on our first major Event Security contract – a small 800 capacity event in Kendal named Kendal Calling – little did we know at the time it would grow to the incredible 30,000 capacity event it is today.

Our team onsite at Kendal Calling has grown from just 15 in 2005 to over 350 at the 2019 festival.

2006 saw us establish a Security Guarding division, our first customer being Lancashire County Council.  It also saw the introduction of the SIA and the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme. We helped pilot the scheme and played a part in drawing up the first workbook for the SIA. We were one of the first companies in the UK to hold SIA Approved Contractor Status – there are around 850 now.

Since then we have continued to progress and make our mark on the industry to become the FGH you know today. And we like to think that we continue to play a leading role in raising the standard of the Security Industry.

We are the most decorated Private Security company in the UK and are the only Security Company ever to be recognised as a Times Top 100 Employer. As we continue to grow, we want to stay faithful to our vision and continue to Keep People Safe.

Local causes in the areas we operate in

Local causes in the areas we operate in. We aim to make a real difference in the communities we operate in and help to support a number of localised charities, from Unique Kids through to CancerCare.

Seasonal drives with key partners

Over the years this has included a range of initiatives ranging from working with homeless charities through to donating and distributing toys to children’s charities at Christmas time.

Taking part in national initiatives

Such as Movember which aims to raise awareness of the issues effecting men’s health in the UK. It’s not just about growing moustaches though as each year we organise a charity climb.

Our Accreditations

Initiatives designed to keep people safe in the wider community

Our Evading Violent Encounters (EVE) scheme is a course which is completely funded by FGH and open to all. It aims to raise awareness of women when out in social situations or who work in any industry where they deal with the public how to avoid and remove themselves from potentially dangerous situations. It is our aim to have delivered this to over 10,000 across the country by 2020 at a range of festivals, events and venues, completely free of charge.

Carbon Neutral and thinking about our impact

We work with the Woodland Trust to fully offset our carbon footprint each year and reduce this by 10% each year. Through our ISO 14001 accreditation, we aim to reduce the amount of waste we produce as a business each year and actively encourage our employees to think about the impact which they have. Together we’re trying to make the planet better.

Best professional and personal achievement

This is a really tough one. I am very fortunate to have such an amazing team around me and to be constantly offered so many opportunities with both FGH Security and the Royal Marines.

Highlights so far:
1. Appearing on BBC Dragons Den,
2. Climbing Mont Blanc,
3. Running 72 miles coast to coast,
4. Gaining my Green Beret,
5. Standing on stage with my team every time we win a new award.

Bio

I founded FGH Security when I was a first-year student aged 19. I was sick and tired of security companies treating my friends really badly. It was meant to be just a little bit of pocket money whilst I studied. By the time I graduated we had 60 people in our team so I decided to pursue it full time.

We have been very fortunate to have some amazing customers that have taken us on their growth journeys over the past fifteen years.

Every day is just amazing at work. I am very lucky to be involved in so many projects and to work with so many really great passionate people.

I love to create precise and hopefully engaging word-based content and wage a one-man crusade against the grocer’s apostrophe, missing capital letters and the use of the word ‘bespoke’ in any context.  It gives me the opportunity to wave business cards in the faces of those who told me I would never find a professional use for an English degree.

Best professional and personal achievement

My proudest professional achievement is coming up with the phrase “Keeping People Safe” as well as being part of the management team that took FGH from a bunch of Door Supervisors in Lancaster to the embryo of what the company is today.

Personally, my greatest achievement is raising 4 wonderful children.  It’s definitely not getting my first Black Belt in Aikido from the great Ulf Evenas back in 2012.  Honest.

Bio

I have lived a super exciting life including graduating from Lancaster University, the University of Cumbria and the University of Central Lancashire (in that order) and working for a diverse range of high quality employers including FGH Security, myself and FGH Security again.

I first started with FGH Security in 2006 and I’ve spent most of my career in Learning and Development (15 years) and Security (12 years) note that some of these years overlap.  I’m not that old.  I have also spent a considerable amount of time raising 4 wonderful children and doing what my wife tells me to.

  • Who inspires you?
King Henry II, that guy certainly knew how to get things done. Shame about his parenting style…
  • What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to have people try to punch me in the head and then apply their face to some mats.

I also like outrageous geek stuff like Dungeons and Dragons.

I have also been informed by my 4-year-old that I like playing Om Nom Run with him.  I dispute this claim.

  • Do you have a favourite mantra or saying?

There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.

  • Favourite book:

I’d like to say Brothers Karamazov because I love it and it makes me sound smart, but I’d be lying. It’s Lord of the Rings.

Operations – having recently joined the Operations Team, I enjoy being able to continually learn and develop my knowledge as to how the FGH Operations Team functions and how we can support our staff that we deploy all over the country.

Being deployed – I enjoy the ever-changing nature of being deployed and travelling to different events all over the country. With events coming back this summer, I cannot wait to be back in the fields and in the middle of all the fun. However, the Lancaster Student Union (Sugarhouse) will always be my go-to venue to work at as it’s a natural fit with me being a Lancaster Uni student.

Having always been associated with festivals and events, my passion will always lie within this area of the industry. I have been involved in over 100 amazing live events from Kendal Calling to looking after the ‘Banksy’ exhibition in London. Recently I have had the opportunity to gain some invaluable experience in the corporate side of the industry looking after clients such as Adidas in Central London and enjoy meeting new people everyday and sharing knowledge and experience.

Best professional and personal achievement

My greatest personal achievements centre around our big contract wins and the hard work and effort that has gone into our development in London over the last two years. It was a fantastic day when we won our biggest contract ever with Adidas UK and a testament to the continuous hard work of the entire team. I am also very proud to have progressed from a festival security officer to being given the opportunity to run security teams of up to 200 staff on a live site.

Bio

Since finishing university, I spent 10 years involved in the night time economy owning and managing pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. I joined FGH back in 2016 as a festival supervisor and became a part of the management team in 2018 with the specific remit of regular events. In 2019 I moved to London to become our Operations Manager for the South of England.
