Clash of the FGH Titans

Lancaster University witnessed one of the highlights of this year’s FGH sporting calendar; FGH’s very own equivalent of a rugby union derby match which pitted the endurance and flair of the University of Salford against the titan efforts of Lancaster University. Salford’s 1st team and Lancaster’s 2nd team both play within the BUCS Rugby Union 2014-2015 – Northern 3A league and this particular fixture has been eagerly anticipated for months. FGH Security is the main kit sponsor for Salford University Rugby Union team and the training kit sponsor for Lancaster University’s Rugby Union team; both teams have players who regularly work for us. It would be safe to say that in the run up to this sporting showdown loyalties within the FGH Camp were split.

Both Lancaster and Salford put in some credible performances in what was an enjoyable and closely fought encounter. When the final whistle sounded Lancaster had edged Salford by just 12 points to 10, despite Salford wrapping up the first half of the match with a formidable 10- 0 advantage. However, Lancaster emerged at half time a different side, charged and on a mission to test the Salford defence to its limits, quickly putting a try past the Salford backs and continued to apply pressure throughout the entirety of the second half. The deciding score was a timely converted try- the result of an exceptional breakaway from the line out. The first clash of the FGH Titans was to be Lancaster’s day, however, Salford have the consolation of leaving the match unlucky to have not got the result they wanted following a controversial disallowed try in the dying minutes of play.

Dave Hassall (FGH Marketing Manager) watched the game and presented his own informal FGH awards. Sam Hadlington (Lancaster) and Dominic West (Salford) were both jointly awarded ‘Man of the Match’ accolades following standout performances. Dave enjoyed “the opportunity to watch both teams play each other and to see the staff that work for us playing to such a high standard”, he like the rest of the FGH, is looking forward to the return leg in the new year when Lancaster visit Salford to play.
