We give financial support to encourage a healthy active workforce

As an organisation we encourage grassroots sports and sponsor a number of other employees to encourage a fit and healthy workforce. As part of this we sponsor and support three University Rugby Union Teams; Salford, Manchester Metropolitan and Lancaster.

This year has seen some significant positive changes for Lancaster University Rugby Club. Most notably is the introduction of new club coach Ryan De La Harpe, who has implemented an exciting style of rugby which allows the players to play with freedom and creativity.  As a direct result of this Lancaster University 1XV have had a roaring start to the season with a total of seven wins from seven games. This is testament to the hard work and dedication being put in not only by the 1XV but by the club as a whole. This Wednesday sees Lancaster University’s undefeated 1XV take on Liverpool University 2XV in their first game of 2016. With a long break since their last game the 1XV have been working hard to improve every aspect of their game and they will be looking to make the hard work pay off by putting on an impressive performance against their northwest rivals Liverpool. This game promises to be exciting from the first whistle with plenty of points being scored.

The 2XV have had a mixed season so far. However, with two wins under their belt and two games in hand the season could still prove successful with a mid-table finish. The 2XV squad this year has been a great stepping stone for players, with a high number of players who started the year moving up to the 1XV. Lancaster University 2XV will also take on Liverpool University 3XV this Wednesday. The 2XV have also been constantly improving both individually and as a team and the performances are starting to show this. The first fixture between the two sides was narrowly won by Liverpool, but Lancaster will be looking to avenge their defeat.

After a tough start to the season for the 3XV they have started to come into their own and play together as a team towards the end of last year. They were rewarded with a well fought win against UCLAN and look forward to building on this throughout the rest of the year.

The development squad is a fairly new addition to LURUFC. However, at the start of this academic year there was a large drive on increasing participation with funding from the RFU. The development squad faced UCLAN in their game and were defeated 50-0. Not to be deterred the team have been working hard every Sunday with coaching support from the RFU. This paid off when they faced UCLAN for a second time and won 22-10 which is testament to the hard work they have put in. Most recently they have also beaten Bolton University 45-3.

With just under three months now until Roses 2016 where LURUFC will take on University of York in their annual varsity; Lancaster are looking to build real momentum in their upcoming games. David Hassall, Senior Manager, who oversees the FGH athlete programme said, “All four teams have performed fantastically and despite being from Liverpool myself I hope they go on to beat Liverpool University this week. It’s great to see the members of staff who work for us each week and represent us so well be a credit to both the University and the FGH on the pitch too. I’m sure with the performances that they have been putting in this season they are not going to need much luck in their cup games.”
